A little preface first, within the last few years I have started collecting gold world coins in earnest (I had picked up a couple here or there over the last decade, but just as pure gold plays). I like the tremendous variety world coins offer. So why not show some of them off? Secondarily, maybe my fellow collectors can show off theirs and point me in the direction of other large, relatively affordable and interesting gold coins I have yet to stumble across. First one up from me, and pardon the pictures, I am using a t5i paired with a Canon 60mm f/2.8 macro USM lens, poor lighting and handheld shooting... Big Joe from Brazil:  Portugal Brazil 12,800 Reis 1732-M (Minas Gerais) Obverse: King Joćo (John) V laureate head right, IOANNES V DG PORT ET ALG REX Reverse: Portugal arms on crowned ornate shield Gold, 38 mm, 28.58 gm These large coins were called "Dobras", made in Brazil from 1727 to 1733, and had a value close to the Spanish eight Escudo coin or "Doubloon". They were known in the American colonies and other places as "Joes" from Johannes, the name of the king in Latin. They were mentioned in almanacs of the period and US Continental Congress foreign coin valuations, and were also a favorite of pirates. This one was minted in the mining town of Vila Rica (Rich Village), now known as Ouro Preto (Black Gold), in the state of Minas Gerais (General Mines) which was the gold mining region north of Rio de Janeiro. The Vila Rica mint operated only from 1724 to 1734. The large coins were made to keep up with the gold being produced in the Brazilian mining area Likewise, the United States started making twenty-dollar gold coins in 1849 to handle the gold produced in California. Love the Cuban 20 peso, of course. Would look great in my collection, but I would probably cringe at what you would want for it. Especially now that gold has started to rise. I've been picking up foreign gold for the last 3 years, but nothing of that size.

@ Willieboyd2 Nice, I like that Big Joe coin. I appreciate the history you provided too. Reminds me of a coin I bid on recently, that I had hoped to get for a great deal. @ Greasy Fingers Thanks! I hope to take even better pictures in the future when I have a proper setup. But for now I will continue freehand shooting and using whatever lighting I have available. Next coin up from me is the most modern gold foreign coin I have in my collection. It also happens to be the largest by weight too. Peru 100 Soles 46.8071 grams .9000 gold   |

@ Pepactonius Thanks for posting, I had never heard of or seen a Dominican Republic 1955 30 gold coin. Next large gold coin from my collection, a little more worn and dinged than most my gold coins - still like it all the same. I love the reverse of St George slaying the dragon.
