I found a 1978 quarter today that looks a little odd. I compared it to another 1978 quarter from the same mint and the lettering seems thicker. The pictures have the quarter in question under the other quarter for comparison. There is also some strange toning going on the obverse, it's not tape or anything stuck on the coin. What's going on with this coin?
It is thick looking as the deeper recesses of the die had some grease in them. This prevents the upper part of the devices (the thinner part) from forming. No premium for this. Just know why there look wider is the premium for this. (knowledge)
New question: could the devices look thinner than normal? Yes. If the die is over polished, the dies wider parts can be reduced in size and make the coins devices look smaller: Note the devices will shorter in height. Again no premium for this. Just a die event from over polishing. Sometimes it looks sever:
