Last year of the Oudine design, which had been around in one form or another since 1848, although only since 1870 on bronze coins: First year of the beautiful Dupuis design on the bronze coins: For the silver half-, one- and two-franc coins, it was the launch of Roty's famous sower design. A modern interpretation of this can still be seen on French coins today. Unusually, the 1898 coins don't have the 'marques et differents' (the emblems of the chief engraver and mint master) either side of the date: Another big change on French coins from 1898 is that the 'A' mintmark for Paris was discontinued. Coins struck at Paris from 1898 (and since 1973 at Pessac) bear no mintmark.
