Those wonderful tokens are outside my area of collection, but they are fascinating - glad to see them! @tdziemia, good to have you back in the game, looking forward to that Polish silver! Meanwhile, back in revolutionary France ... France 1793/an 2, 2 sols, Rouen (B), 19.6 g.The first coins of the republic appear in 1793, still using the livre-sous-denier system. The portrait of the unfortunate Louis XVI, executed in January 1793, is being replaced by various revolutionary motives. The obverse of the 2 sols coin shows a law tablet, stating that "All men are equal before the law." The reverse shows the scales of justice, with a phrygian cap on top. This is also the first time the phrase Liberte egalite - "Freedom [and] Equality" - appears on a coin. There is a shortage of copper, so coins are minted of the bronze from church bells - the government has seized the property of the church in the name of the revolution, and this is one way of literally turning that property into money.  France 1793/an 2, 6 livres, Paris (A), 29.3 g.The largest silver coins of the monarchy were called ecus but did not have a fixed value. That was practical for the king and treasury, who could increase the value of their holdings simply by ascribing a higher nominal value to the coins in their possession. That habit came to an end with the republic, and the value of the ecu was fixed at 6 livres and explicitly stated on the coins. The obverse shows the Genius of the Republic writing CONSTITUTION on a tablet.  The revolutionary calendar, starting with year 1 on the day of the new constitution, 22 Sep 1792, came into force in October 1793. By then it was already year 2 (so there are no coins dated year 1). A double dating with both 1793 and "AN II" was used for the first emissions. |

@princetane, thank you for the kind words. I am not as fluent in Polish history as you are in your country's past. I do know that one of the factors that led to Poland unravelling is that the Sejm (the legislative body) had rules that made it very easy for a small number of members (perhaps even one) to veto legislation, and this meant that foreign intrigue to influence decisions was commonplace. Poland 1793 10 groszy miedzianych. Reverse inscription reads "250 1/2 to the Cologne Mark" in Polish. this reign was the first to have Polish inscriptions on some denominations.   Edited by tdziemia

That has left traces in many European languages (including Swedish), where the expression "Polish Parliament" is used to describe assemblies where there are too many wills and no decisions can be made  Edited by erafjel

My last 1793 is this extremely worn and beat up French 2 Sols from 1793, Strasbourg mint (BB)   I'm glad to see some 1793 Large Cents, that's one coin (in any form) that has remained well outside of my budget for years. One of my favourite 1792 conders is this token here   Ketley Inclined Plane and Coalbrookdale Iron Bridge Halfpenny 1792 Good fine with a weak central strike. This coin is interesting as its one of the first promoting technology and why Britain was leading the world in the late 18th century. the coin is dated 1792 yet shows the Iron Bridge at Coal Brookdale erected in 1778/79? and this wondrous cast iron bridge still stands today 242 years later  Image Credit - Alchetron the Social EncyclopaediaThe Bridge was light in construction yet very strong and Coalbrookdale itself was a centre of cast iron production producing railings, seats and all types of elaborate filigree work. The Ketley Inclined Plane nearby was a very early Canal boat lift, before railways took over in the 1830s and 1840s, canals were the artery of getting things around Britain and the 1770s to 1820s was their peak age, the inclined plane had metal chains which could drag a canalboat up several feet to a higher level, and was different to a canal lock. It was also a remarkable piece of technology. A very interesting piece! Wonder if we will see more of them as its one of the most popular of the Conders, most people I know have one. And will we see any 1792 US pattern coins like the Dismes. Edited by Princetane
