Something different today to welcome the 16th century: a coin with Sigismund III facing left  In 1600 the Krakow mint re-started, after a 50 year closure. For reasons I don't completely understand, the 1600 trojaks (and some in 1601) used a left-facing bust. All other coins of his reign, both before and after, every one of the 10 mints, had him facing right.   |

My entry for 1600 is a lot more unusual - starting with the part where I'm not sure if it's even eligible for 1600...     Tsardom of Russia, Boris Godunov, kopek Overstruck, probably 7109 AM (1600/1 AD) over 7108 AM (1599/1600 AD) 15x12 mm, 0.65 grams More details in the original threadEDIT: I have several other Russian wire coins with more definite dates in the late 1590s, but offhand I'm not sure where they are at the moment. I'll try to check if I could take some pics. I think I might have one old pic ready for 1599... Edited by january1may

1599 Poland 6 groschen (szostak), Malbork mint. At the time, this was the largest denomination circulating coin in the Poland-Lithuania commonwealth.   |

I apologize for the relative lack of quality; those photos were taken with a webcam (!) back in 2014. I'll definitely try to take better pics of my 1599s for later editions.   Russia, Boris Godunov, wire denga, Pskov mint ΠCP(3) = (Pskov) (7)10(7) AM = 1598/99 AD (mostly 1599) You'd have to trust that the last letter is supposed to be there - dated Boris from Pskov mint is a one-year type, so it can't be anything else, but the letter isn't actually visible in hand either. As I've mentioned, I have a few more coins from the 1590s, but I have very little idea where they are, so pictures might be tricky... |

Nice to see something different that few of us have in our collections @j1m. 1598 B Poland 3 groschen (trojak), Bydgoszcz mint. From 1588 to 1600 when the Krakow mint re-opened, trojaks were struck with Sigismund's portrait at six "crown mints" (Olkusz, Poznan, Malbork, Bydgoszcz Wschowa (Fraustadt) and Lublin), as well as the Lithuanian mint in Vilnius and the Livonian mint in Riga. With major and minor varieties most years at each mint, this series is a favorite of Poliash collectors. For example, in this weekend's Niemczyk auction, of the 600 Polish lots from 1500-1800, 150 are Sigismund III trojaks from this 10 year period.   |

These coins were minted from approximately 1595-1620 so I'm going to put it here now just since I've been away a lot. @paralyse, very interesting coin for its combination of older devices (14-15th c for the cross), but modern font. 1597 Lithuanian trojak (3 groschen)   |

Lovely! Our first coin from the Malbork mint (@spence's was our first from Olkusz) For 1596 I have another trojak, this time from the Lublin mint.   |
