If you can find some coin shows in your area you may be surprized at how many counterfeits, fakes, copies, etc are being sold there. It is just one more of the growing portions of this hobby. Some are very well made and command a large price. Even some of the really poor ones sell. I remember not long ago I purchased a fake Liberty Walking half dollar that was so bad it was funny. It was made of Lead and only the obverse. The reverse was blank. I paid a dollar for the thing though. Some counterfeits actually are selling for more than an original if made really well and of high grade metals. One fake I saw was made of pure Silver. I guess the counterfeiter didn't have any Copper so used all Silver. Interesting hobby you know.

Joking aside, I'm sorry to hear you got taken. ebay's a real shame--the number of overgraded/cleaned/fake coins is appalling.

When I was in Spain this past summer, I saw so many fakes. I want to say that I saw 2 fake 8 Reales for every real one I saw. Some of these were rather good looking fakes, but others just made you laugh (such as one that had raised rather than incuse chop marks). You really have to be careful. Fakes are just everywhere now. This is why I have not bought coins off of ebay since 2001.

Quote: I imagine that if it is a contemporary counterfeit then I may have a bit of value, but if it is a modern fake, then you have a worthless paperweight. I'll bet a genuine for real fake Jefferson (1941D?) is worth more than the government issue.

Zohar444- what exactly are the major signs that your Funf Mark is fake? I must admit that the lettering does look a bit odd and the color is a bit off.

I believe the weight to be less than spec and the color seems artificial. You got it.

For as many of them that made it into circulation, they're surprisingly hard to find.

There's one specific counterfeit I'd like to buy
Henning Nickel
I wonder what those would sell for? Interesting story. Makes you wonder why someone would spend so much time making a Nickel instead of a quarter or half dollar. Ever see that movie about the guy that made counterfeit dollars. I think he did it for about 20 years. Those too would probably bring a good price.
