I picked up these two coins toady from a local show. The 1853 large cent is a Newcomb-19 with a repunched 3 and has some very nice wood grain toning on the obverse, I did not have a Trade dollar for my type set and thought this chop marked 1875-S would fill the whole nicely, even though it appears to be cleaned a bit.

Nice coins. Don't worry about possible cleaning. Back in the old days that was commonly done to many coins and for many reasons. Some people would actually dump coins in gasoline to get some of the junk off so they wouldn't ruin your clothing. When I was a kid my Dad had a gas station and that was common since lots of the coins in the area got full of grease and oils.

Now that is an interesting bit of history. Maybe that is NCS's secret!

Are the cuts on the coin Oriental words or do they just look like it?
Rest in Peace

They are probably closer to a merchant's "initials" or logo. Sorta like being branded.
