Looking at this very basic looking note, one should be able to hazard a guess at its date of issue...............1914......right at the beginning of this 'necessity money' episode with the German currency. It was issued in Janow, has a hand-written face value (50pf), signature and serial number, along with the official stampmark.

I like that this is a less obvious example.

For me, being mostly handwritten is a good indication of its release early in notgeld history.

Neat!

Fun fact: "Jänner" is specifically the Austrian version of the word. The standard German version is "Januar".
(At one point Austrian also had "Feber" for standard "Februar", but this particular calendar clearly used the standard version.)

Notgeldman,

Thank you very much for this informative post about Germany's notgeld.

Do I understand correctly that they were issued due to the shortage of coins and banknotes after the First World War and dealing with hyperinflation as well?

Appreciate your taking time to educate us about the notgeld!

Looking forward to your next post!

Kind regards,

Thanks guys for the comments - it does help me!!
@january1may - thanks for the comment. Always good to hear or see posts like this. Helpful to everyone, including myself. All my other Austrian noteld seem to have the months written as per German and close to the English word - so I will have to keep an eye out for 'Jaenner' & 'Feber'on other Austrian notgeld. I have already checked some pieces and Mar - Dec look like the normal month name's one would expect eg) Marz for March, Oktober for October & Dezember for December.

@Carrigna - thanks for the question/query. Yes, they were a result of the shortage of small change but starting in 1914...............and went all the way to very late 1923/24 when the whole hyper-inflation period was totally out of control and the monetary system collapsed. Through that period, the notgeld issues primary role change and we can see this through their designs and graphics, motives and quotations. As the Reichsbank only had the legal right to issue money, the notgeld issuers (cities, towns, villages, companies, clubs etc etc) did not want to antaganise the Reichsbank with their issues and the Reichsbank seems to have turned a blind eye to it all - they needed all the help they could get of course. That is why most of the issues have the word 'notgeld' (emergency money) on them rather than just 'geld' (money). Others descriptive terms were used as well like 'Gutschein' (voucher). I'll look for another good example now and post that later. Its 11:55 here in the UK, so 5 minutes from my birthday!!

I quickly found this note, which is a good example. It has the word 'Wechselchein' on it - 'exchange note' or 'bill of exchange'......and more importantly 'zur Aushilfe'.......'for temporary help' (to the problem with a shortage of loose change):

German-Notgeld-Collector-Of-46-Years,-From-Uk.

One can see that it is a piece of 'kleingeld' (small face value money note, with a face value under 1m........so all the 'pfg' notes) and dates from 1917, with a pretty basic design. It comes from the notgeld category known as 'verkehrsausgaben' : notes that were issued to actually go into circulation. Its validity period ends on '31 Dezember 1918'. Its a long validity period for a notgeld issue.

Happy Birthday, Notgeldman!

I think it is still 13rd in the UK. Just one hour away from 14th, right?

I really appreciate your explanation regarding the notgeld. I certainly learnt new things today!

Thank you for sharing the example with us. I understand the significance of having notgeld in Germany during this period.

I do hope you had a wonderful time celebrating your birthday today!

Best wishes,
