But my point was that you submit a coin and they either do something or they don't - entirely at their discretion and without mention of options or discussion of potential benefits or risks of their choice. Please correct me if you can describe your experience that is different.

That's what you're paying them to do, make the best decision on it and do it. And no in many cases they couldn't have a detailed discussion like that without giving away methods they would also have to charge a lot more if they're going to be spending 20+ minutes on the phone with every customer. If you want to talk to them about it at all show up to a coin show they're at and bring it to the table.

PCGS requires an authorized form of payment IN ADVANCE.

They all do.

And all the fees are charged regardless of what they do. Including the mandatory minimum "Guarantee Premium" which effectively becomes the non-optional "evaluation" fee on top of the shipping and grading fees.

No "guaranteed premiums" are not always charged. They're only charged when they apply, eg your coin crossed over/your coin upgraded in reconsideration or regrade/your coin was conserved

So you agree with me. It is a "blackbox" procedure - no submitter input nor feedback to the submitter. You pays your money and you takes your chances.

It is for precisely that reason that I sought feedback from anyone who might be able to share knowledge or experience regarding use of a TPG restoration service - especially for copper.

So you apparently agree here, too. I'm not sure what you thought was being discussed, but even the topic title refers to "restoration," the term used by PCGS for their "conservation" service. Nobody has hinted at anything else.

Frankly I think trying anything yourself would do more harm than good. Even a Details Unc 1909-S-VDB is a relatively impressive coin to many. You could potentially have it conserved but "Altered Surfaces" could be a number of things and even then they don't guarantee they can add value or even preserve the value it has.

Other than the regular conservation steps the chances of reducing the value significantly is pretty high, and the value of the coin as it sits isn't exactly in the ballpark of a 10-20 dollar error you can afford to ruin.

I'd be happy with it, personally...one could find much worse examples of an S-VDB that will still blow the average error coin out of the water.
