Have any of you been detecting of a night?,I believe the detectors work a lot better on or in cold ground and this is why some detectorist work of a night here in Australia,I thought this would be seasonal thing but I was wrong as some of my friends work the W.A. and Victorian goldfields of a night in winter as well as in summer. In the latest Gold,Gem and Treasure which is a monthly journal on prospecting here in Australia they talk about the pros and con's of detecting of a night and the advantage of a headlight, but they suggest that you only turn it on when you have located a target (so your eyes get accustomed to the dark),"bugger that!" you should see some of the open mine shafts in the bush good grief some are a 150 feet deep some with no indication that there there. sorry this is the only photo left and it's of the inside looking out of the brewery at Sandstone so it's close enough .

Can't say that I have done any night hunting. Most of the areas I look are closed down at night. Sure would like to now that it is getting hot out. Hit 99 here today. And I sure would hate to fall down a hole like that. Would really ruin your day.

Thanks mate your feedback on this thread does mean a lot to me and that is the time and energy I put into this thread trying to give the members hope that the gold is still out there and knowing that the thread was worth it even for a good feedback such as yours . Just in but late news a 90oz placer nugget found in California's Washington lead last February, this will be the largest nugget from the California goldfields still in existence (also from any U.S. goldfields),it sold in auction for $460,000.00. edited to insert U.S.

I would absolutely love to hunt for gold, I live in NJ so I don't believe theirs any around here. So I have a lot to learn before I venture out. Not knowing witch way to turn keeps me dreaming instead of acting. My sister lives in WV I've seen people panning at one of the parks, I was with quite a few family members so I couldn't join them. It was a very tough battle! I just picked up Garrets Panning Kit, I received nothing but laughs from my family, saying what you gonna do with that? With my head high I said, You just wait! One day your going to eat those words. They couldn't understand why. Doesn't matter I know why. I figure I'd start getting some of the equipment now, I'm pretty good with building things so I can build my own S Box. Add my metal detector and now the dream is starting to become a reality. I'd like to find a nice stream or river and set up on the side. Work during the day, do some fishing at night then wake up and do it again. I didn't take boy scouts but I'd make them proud. lol So how often do you hit streams rivers to pan, whats the difference between a power sluice and a regular sluice? Once again I thank you for a great vacation! I was falling all over in that store though when she turned the lights out on ya.lol

I would think the power sluice used a motor to rock it.

Close BiggFredd very close amassey08873 what a power sluice is in reality water hydraulics concentrator that you can use away from the stream,it's just like any other sluice but with a pump you pump the water through some hoses to the top of the 2 tier compact sluice top is for separating large stone bottom is the riffles that concentrate the gold and the beauty about this idea is you can use it away from the steam (in the stream to 150yards away from the stream depending on the size of your pump and how much hose you carry)some portable sluices have a hose that runs a vibrator on the sluice so the water passes through this first before entering the head of the sluice and washing down to the riffles I hope this explanation is sufficient. Panning is a great past time and to make the best of it is to hit the rivers and creeks after flooding, some times it doesn't flood for years maybe but you know the big rains will come so it's just a matter of wait and see and why after the floods well it washes down into the natural traps fresh gold so find the traps and you find the gold . Unfortunately I was sitting on the shops loo when the lights went out and couldn't see my hand in front of my face

We have one of those touristy thingo's down in Victoria call Sovereign Hill, you get to pan in the little creek there, I took my mate down to see it but I knew that they salt the creek with dust you're supposed to pan the specks out of it but not for me as I was spoiled with the power sluice. But still a good start amassey as It will give you a feel for how it happens. Just to wet your appetite this is one they left behind at Kingower

It's hovering around 100 in the shade here in southern Illinois (USA)- keeping me indoors - seems like it's so easy to forget that the weather in your neck of the woods is so much different than the weather in mine - just something one doesn't think of much, I guess. Happy to hear you're doing well. Can you believe the spot price for gold? Closed for the weekend (New York) at $1,594.10/ozT(USD) - needless to say, at that price, I haven't added to my little stash in quite awhile - don't think it will lose much ground any time soon given the economic crisis being experienced in so many parts of the world. If anything, I think it will continue to rise - just my own speculation, of course, but I think right now is a good time to just sit on what you have.

It's not weather, it's seasons. They're in the middle of winter.
