While looking thru some of my coins I noticed one of my French 20 Franc coins had a counter stamp on it. WBW, and am wondering if anyone out there has an Idea of what this could be for?

I've seen huge numbers of these coins and even remember them in circulation, but have never seen anything like that. Perhaps it was just done by a bored teenager during a school metalwork class?

As a bored teen, and even as a bored adult, I have marked thousands of US quarters with a Y punch to make the eagle look like he is wearing a necktie.

I have never seen any returned to me in change and I have never seen one for sale as a countermarked coin.

However, I would say that my ability to impress the stamp was at least as good as the WBW monogram seen here.

Surprised no one called it "Penguin Bird" and tried to add a huge premium!

Would guess this to be a local merchant mark.
