PaddyB Pillar of the Community United Kingdom 945 Posts	Posted 04/11/2020 04:48 am There are two main varieties for the 1864 penny - yours is the slightly more common one with a serif for the tail of the 4 in the date. The other one has a crosslet in the same place. To be "lustrous" the coin has to be pretty much uncirculated. The lustre is the original shine put on at the mint by an annealing process. This soon disappears in circulation. Any well worn coin like yours showing something that appears to be lustre has either been artificially cleaned and retoned, or has gathered a tone from the environment that resembles lustre in colour. Princetane Pillar of the Community 4628 Posts	Posted 04/11/2020 2:46 pm Sofia, your coin has been badly cleaned. It is way too worn to be in original lustrous condition. Still its better than quite a lot of 1860s pennies, that are usually worn flat with a date barely visible. Some of these coins circulated for over a century. Report this Post to the Staff
