Yes it has happened many times. In various cities, people toss gold coins in the Salvation Army Christmas pot. In Denver (Christmas 2007), six Liberties (gold) were found in the pot. Experts analyzed them, then auctioned them off with proceeds going to the SA.

I don't believe they have found a gold buffalo in any of those salvation army kettles yet! Besides, those gold coins going into those kettles were donations. they weren't spent on Cigarettes or beer at a covenience store.
