I might bid on this if I can get some sort of consensus either to it's desirability or lack of. These aren't my pictures so I've done all I can with them. So over all, what opinions do you have about this 1880 S Morgan dollar? Edited by KauaiHawaiiGuy 05/16/2020 10:40 am

Cameo on the reverse is striking. I think its MS-65 or better, but can be tough to grade a darkly toned coin from just photos. Toning is not unattractive.

One possible concern is near the PL in pluribus. Hard to tell if that's a scratch or a die break. Maybe get higher resolution photos from seller?

Looks pretty nice, I'm just not a fan of heavy toning.

Strike is just a little weak for an 80(S) which are normally sharp and bold. eye appeal is AVG-. the toning and could be hiding just about anything. personally I would pass but if I was to buy I wouldn't pay more than $50-55 for it. it might clean up a little bit with an acetone soak

Looks okay, but nothing special.....especially for an 80-S. Shame that the cameo is on the wrong side, it would be far more appealing if it were on the obverse.

The gamble on this one is that you've got an MS-66 under that toning. There are some hints of that. The cheek and fields look extremely clean, other than what might be a scratch but could also be nothing between the P & L on obverse, and the nearly unbroken cameo on the reverse eagle suggests a very high grade coin.

The toning is too heavy IMO to get a accurate grade. Also not attractive toning IMO. I'd pay maybe $50 for the chance it would grade high.

Quote: Also not attractive toning IMO. It's funny about toning isn't it. One person loves some natural toning and another person hates it. But hey, if your not into natural toning, there's a guy on ebay that sells these "more colorful" toned Morgans all day long, and people buy them!

Unable to grade from these photos.

Looks like a hit on the chin and a light scratch at 10:00 obverse. Average toning, but a very nice reverse. The toning makes it hard to assess, so I'd assume no more than MS-64 to be safe.

I am at 63/64 because of the marks on the cheek, and toning hides marks. The coin is original. Not much luster showing on the photo, and eye appeal appears to be lacking. I like the reverse, but there are so many 80 S that a better example with eye appeal can be found.

I have 3 other 1880 S Morgans already, 2 in MS, but I like this Morgan. I'm partial to toning and since the consensus seems to be MS, if I can get it for the right price, I'll try and pick it up, and my price is always considerably under market.

I doubt the coin will look like this in hand. Always a crap shoot buying from photos, especially toned coins.

I won't take a crack at the grade but I personally like the toning . I like having a mix of different toned coins and untoned ones . I would pay going rate for the grade if I where bidding.

Well thank you all for your input, but in life sometimes crap happens and then you die. I placed my bid seconds before the auction ended, my screen froze for just a couple of seconds and then came back on and said the auction ended, with the winning bid $6 less than what I bid.
So, looks like crap happened today ............... that's life.
Adieu .......
