There are over 20 main varieties for 1861 pennies, leaving out proofs, and in that condition it is going to be a long haul to work out which you have. You can start by looking at the list of varieties, which will give you which obverses and reverses are likely. Then go to the sections on each of these and see if you can work out which ones you have. Then back to the varieties list to see how rare or otherwise it is and get the Freeman or Gouby number.
