Emailed the US Mint earlier today to suggest American artists (Musicians, Composers, Poets, etc.) for a new Quarters program. Got an email back stating they keep it in mind. Yay!

I realize that they are not in the same category, but the Mint did strike a series that commemorated American artists from multiple categories.

You can check out a discussion of the series here:

A new addition to my set of composers. This time from Austria: a 2 Schilling commemorative featuring Franz Schubert (1797-1828).

After completing the Ukrainian series, I am now focusing on composers from Poland.
The first two coins feature Francois Chopin (1810-1849) and Ignacy Paderewski (1860-1941), respectively.

More coins of Polish composers will follow in the coming weeks and months.

@NumisEd: Nice additions! Interesting topical/thematic pursuit. Best of luck with it!

You should let us know your favorite composition by each composer as you post his/her coin.

Though his claims to fame lie elsewhere - American Independence advocate, author, Governor, Secretary of State, President - Thomas Jefferson was also an accomplished amateur violinist with an appreciation of classical music.

Here is the 1994 Thomas Jefferson commemorative silver dollar. It was struck "in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Jefferson." As Jefferson was born in 1743, the year of issue should have been 1993, but that's a story for another post.

Thanks, @commems.
I recently was reviewing commemorative coin series and noticed it is very rare to find anything pre-1900.
I am aware of the Swiss Shooting Thalers minted from 1842, and of course the American Classic Commemoratives (from 1892), but apart from these two there apparently was not much interest in creating commemorative coins according to with a certain theme.
Yes, you had the "Jubilee this and Jubilee that" coins from the UK, but these coins were struck for the occasion. There are no "Classic Commemorative Coins of the UK" pre-1900 as far as I know. And that goes for pretty much most of the countries in the world.

@NumisEd: Yes, commemorative coins as we think of them today generally started in the 1900s.

You're probably already aware of them, but on the off-chance you aren't...

Hungary has issued a number of commemorative coins that featured musicians/composers, a couple that I'm aware of are:

- 1930 Silver 2 Pengo, 50th Anniversary of the Death of Franz Liszt
- 1967 Silver 50 Forint, 85th Anniversary of Birth of Composer Zoltán Kodály

There's likely others. Good luck with the search!
