Poll Question
At what price point is your "Threshold of Pain" exceeded when it comes to a coin purchase?

Actually it is less than $100.00 for me. Probably start hurting at $35.00.
But it depends on the coin, if it's a steal of a deal, no pain I feel.
I only recall buying a couple over $500.00 and they were gold.

I'd say around $1,000 is my limit, a few purchases I made is still what is called sleeper's.  |

I voted $100 but I normally don't go over $30. I'm most comfortable cherry-picking around $15-$20. That way I don't break the bank trying to find a nice variety.  -CH27 Collector of U.S. Coins, Varieties, and Colonial Coinage

I try to keep each type coin under 1k, but for some types if you want a suitable example you'll have to spend 2-3k

I can't answer that. It really depends on the coin. Is your pain point going to be $25,000 for a
1927-D $20 in mint state?

I said $500.00 because that's close to the most I've ever paid for a coin, but since I retired my limit has gone down dramatically, to less than $100.00.

My most expensive coin was my 1909 S VDB at over $700, other than that one, all have been under $500. I will state that after $200, I start considering a lower grade.

Grapes stated my view, it depends on what you are going after. However for "everyday" purchases anything around $300.

Through research I decide how much I think a coin is worth.
Anything above that causes me pain and it would be unusual for me to pay a higher price.
So my pain level is on a case-by-case basis.
There is one higher level called "no way can I afford that".
No pain involved there.

In general I seldom pay more then $250, but I have half a dozen pieces I have paid $1000 for, one at $2500, and two at $5000. (You don't get chain cents or 1793 caps at $250.)
If you limit the discussion to moderns (the heading of this sub-forum) then under $100.

I used to say $100, but finishing the Dansco albums has me creeping close to $500. I am sure I will have to test the $1000 limit to finish my Mercury and Lincoln sets.  Quote:

I am in a similar spot as Jbuck. For the most part it is under $100, with some exceptions. I have a few key dates left that will mean loosening the wallet to acquire.

I voted $500 to reflect my current feelings, but since I plan on (hopefully) being a big name numismatics dealer someday, that number is subject to change lol.

Depends. I'd have a hard time spending over $500 if it's not gold.
