1990 Bank of England Five Pounds: Close-up of date: The new £5 note introduced in 1990 showed railroad pioneer George Stephenson and his famous locomotive, the Rocket. It replaced the larger note with a portrait of the Duke of Wellington, which had been in circulation since 1971. The Bank of England launched a publicity slogan to encourage the public to redeem the old notes: "Give Wellington the Boot and Put a Rocket in your Pocket!"

One of my favorite banknotes - 1989 Costa Rica 5 colones: Close-up of date: The reverse of this note features a mural painting in San Jose's National Theater, showing the export of bananas and coffee beans in the 19th century. The portrait on the obverse is of Rafael Yglesias Castro, president of Costa Rica from 1894 to 1902. He introduced the Colon as the country's currency unit, and took the first steps to making Costa Rica eco-friendly, by declaring the offshore Isla de Coco a nature reserve. The National Theater, National Art School and Puntarenas Railroad were all built during his period in office. Somehow he also found the time to father 13 children!
