Good Day everyone, Please take a look at my 1977 D Washington quarter. Is it very rare?

Given the photos posted, I'd say no, the quarter isn't rare. It has the appearance of a somewhat lightly circulated '77 D--complete with a spot and a collection of dings.

How was it tested to determine if it was silver? Looks like a nickel clad quarter from your pics.

Also (for future posts) cropping is important, you are showing us 6 to 10xs more of the background as compared to the coin...less background equals more of the coin to view/inspect

5.7 grams is normal for a clad quarter. Looks clad to me, but if you want to you can do the tissue test.

Standard weight for a coppernickel clad quarter is 5.67 grams, which when weighed on a scale that only shows one decimal point will show as 5.7 gram. There is also the problem that the coppernickel clad and 40% silver clad weight overlap so much due to tolerance ranges that it is not possible to tell them apart by weight.

coppernickel clad 5.443 - 5.897 gams
40% silver 5.55 - 5.95 grams
So a quarter that weighs anywhere from 5.55 - 5.897 grams could be either one.

You can't tell a coppernickel clad half from a 40% silver by weight alone either for the same reason.

You CAN tell a clad Ike for a 40% silver by weight though, their tolerance ranges do not overlap.
