The key is when you think you have found a variety go to the reference sites in my signature and see if you can match the die markers. MD will have a much more shelf like doubling and reduce the thickness of the devices, while a true DDO or DDR the devices will be enhanced and show split serifs. Check out the arrows below where the serif is split and then from wexler's site it says: "Die Markers: Obverse: Die scratches SSW to NNE above TY of LIBERTY. Die scratches NW to SE between WE and TRUST. Reverse: Reverse heavily abraded. Two parallel die scratches NNW from between upper C and E of CENT. Remnants of die clash in 3rd bay. Die cracks lower left and lower right Memorial to rim." So just from one view we can confirm by the split serifs and the die markers. Report this Post to the Staff
Grelko Valued Member United States 232 Posts	Posted 08/25/2020 12:38 am I've been going to quite a few different sites to check varieties lately. There's so much to learn haha. The main question I have about doubling. (Let's take the letter U in that picture for example) Does the doubled part of the U stick out just as far, off the coin, as the actual U does? If that's a yes, then I probably haven't seen one yet. If that's a no, that would be the reason I keep getting it mixed up with MD and also the reason I keep going through the same pile of coins multiple times, to check for die markers. I'm sure it will be much easier to distinguish between the two, once I actually find a doubled die. Report this Post to the Staff

It's all about reading and researching to build a mental database.
