I took the advice offered by HGK3 and increased the resolution on my digital microscope, and also attempted to filter the light on additional photos of the areas in question on this coin. These photos show similar doubling images on the earlobe, and the unusual tear images below the eye I had posted earlier. The interesting aspect of the earlobe image is that it appears to be the continuation of a portion of hair from within Lincoln's head which continues all of the way down behind the ear, and then ends behind the earlobe with what looks like a second earlobe. It's less noticeable on the second photo, but you can still see the ridge of the doubling behind the ear.And this portion of hair is noticeable again on the third photo, which creates an image of an additional lobe, although not as distinct on this photo. And I will admit that I can see this earlobe image clearly on some photos, and not as much as on others. I have examined other
LSC coins in my possession and some of them have similar "extra lobe" images, and some do not.
As far as the tear image is concerned, I have seen such on other
LSC coins, but it seems more pronounced on this coin. So, it would appear that this tear type image in some form is not so unusual on the Shield cents.
If you have any further comments, I am all ears (no extra lobes, though).
Thanks all!!
