When I go to shows I usually ride the scoot. When I show up inside lookin' like this, I usually get an armed escort for the duration of my stay.

there's nothing "male" in it :)

I'm afraid I have to agree, here. At least where I live, the male collectors outnumber the female collectors twenty to one, if not more! Why this is, I'm not sure. Perhaps it is that in our modern society, women are taught that money is for buying shoes.

...offered to have him autograph them since he was in that day. After which, he escaped rather quickly! I didn't think I was THAT scary-looking.
He's known for being somewhat evasive, but I cannot really blame him with "Snow" on every FE and IHC variety out there. I would hate all that attention. He doesn't say much even in his own club...so you were lucky to catch a glimpse of his shadow.

Coin collecting is definitely a predominantly male hobby. I went to a few coin shows as a kid and I recall seeing a total of about 10 women, compared to hundreds of men.

Just kidding about that, but really, the only women I see at coin shops are ones who just inherited some "old coins" and want shoe buying money

well, I really wouldn't go so far as to say that women at coin shows just want to sell coins in order to have "shoe-buying money." There certainly are female collectors out there, and there are many wives and girlfriends who gain an appreciation for what her husband or boyfriend collects though not engaging in buying or actively starting their own collections. But I do still wonder why it seems that throughout history coin collecting has always had a lot of male participants. Might this even have something to do with perceived gender norms of previous centuries in the US and Europe? (Sorry for taking this discussion to a rather hypothetical level)
Rest in Peace

I look more like a random college guy, a bit older with facial hair though I guess, but not more than 23-24

I see more woman at coin shows than one might expect. My wife has been going with me for a while now, so my presence is not tilting the numbers towards the men!

Three of my preferred dealers at the shows are "Mom & Pop" operations; and I have spent a lot more time dealing with the mom!

jbuck- you are quite right that there actually are a lot of female dealers. In fact, at my local shop the owner is a guy but 2 of his 3 employees are female.

I think coin collectors come in all shapes, sizes, ages, sex, race, religions, etc. There is no stereotype.

Would you settle for there being an archetype? I have to agree with justcarl... From what I've seen, white males age 55 and up seem to dominate the hobby.

I'm 31, long-haired, large ear piercings, strictly black jeans-black tshirt-black motorcycle boots kinda guy, so about the only place I really fit in is at some of your louder concerts... I felt pretty out-of-place at a coin show.

PennehChaos - Must admit that I am more of the same school of appearance as you. So I bet that you have gotten some interesting reactions over the years as well.
