@Hogarth it's from 1997, so it isn't discontinued. It still circulates heavily.

1997 saw the introduction of the smaller 50p coin.
The larger coins, 1968-1997, are no longer legal tender.
Ignore the prices you'e seen yours offered at on ebay etc. Even in truly uncirculated condition they are only worth a pound or two.

The large 50ps are still accepted at the banks here in the UK, so in that condition it's value is 50p.

This is a normal small size 1997 50 pence that is still current in the UK. Indeed it's still by far the most common date of 50p encountered in circulation! (The large size 50p dated 1997 was issued in Proof and BU sets only).

It has a current face value of approximately 4 Ghanaian Cedis.

The large size 50ps were only issued for sets in 1997 as well. This is clearly just the standard, circulating, small size design.
