About 30-35% of my box, sometimes even 40% of my box is copper. I don't save copper, however.

Casino find tonight! I'm by no means a gambler but me and my gf wanted to check out the new casino. Made $5.xx and when I cashed out a 56-D wheat fell out, what are the odds? Normally in a full box I only get 5-10 wheats! This was in good shape too!

first "box" I've obtained--six wheats total. All rolls were shotgun rolls. I usually get separate rolls--20 here, 20 there. Sometimes shotgun rolls, but mostly hand-wrapped. With separate rolls, there's a better chance of getting somebody's full roll(s) of wheats they cashed in (already happened to me, so I guess lightning doesn't strike twice . . .). But with separate rolls, there's a better chance of getting somebody's dump (also already happened). I'm not sure which I prefer--box or separate rolls. What do you think?  |

i go through a box or 2 every day hunting wheats so far this year I am at 582 wheats found and one indian head. got a call after I left the bank yesterday from the head teller asking me where I was at.told him and he said go across the street at that branch.a woman had turned in 29.00 in pennies and there were a lot of wheats she saw in them.went and bought them got home and sorted them and found 1470 common 40,s and 50,s.there were around 300 teens 20,s and 30,s.mostly teens and twentys.ended up with 2 1909,s one being a vdb,remember a 1912-d.going to sort the older ones in the morning.so wheats are still out there.later greg

Haven't had time to CRH since April. Been embroiled in an extensive home renovation project that's still ongoing. If I'm lucky, it'll all be over by Labor Day! UGH! Got Box #11 that's been sitting on my desk for over 2 months now. Don't know when I'll find time to go through it yet, so I thought I'd drop in and see what others have been finding lately. Got a kick out of seeing many IHC finds and several early Lincolns. When I do get back into the swing of things again I think I'm going to narrow my search for varieties. Too many are of such low value and have such a small collector base that seeking them out seems like a waste of time. I think I'll make a list of only those varieties that have a value of $25 or more and focus on finding those. Even after having invested in a good USB microscope, I am finding it tedious to look for all of the possible varieties out there and hard on the eyes because I still use reading glasses for the initial exam, then the loupe for coins that have earned a closer look, and then finally the microscope for final confirmation on documented varieties. This is all hard on the eyes and time consuming and only rarely results in truly valuable finds, so I'm constantly re-evaluating whether or not the time I'm investing in searching for varieties is truly worthwhile. |

CH - good to hear from you. Just remember that most CRH finds are of low value but very few LWC or IHC finds are valued above $25. Although the variety market isn't nearly as active as some of the traditional niches, the reality is that most of the more valuable finds will be variety or error coins. For me, hunting varieties and finding wheat cents or indian heads is a bonus; they are all welcome finds. No doubt though that variety hunting takes way more time and requires magnification in most instances. So there is eye fatigue for us older hobbyists. But you need to enjoy what your doing, so I'm sure you'll settle on a fun and solid approach. Good luck on the hunt...and the project too! |
