It was all a bit of fun Steve.

But I do grade hard and most Australian silver I see is very heavily worn before 1932, in fact I would say half of all the silver coins before 1929 surviving are Good or worse. The only exceptions would be the Canberra Florin and some 1910 dated coins as they were first years.

Probably 90% of it is Fine and Lower and barely 2% of it is EF or better.

Your Florin, may just make Fair - but it has no rim.

My grading system - UNC, AU, gEF, EF, aEF, gVF, VF, gF, Fine, aFine, gVG, VG, G+, G, aGood, Fair, Poor

1921 is an interesting year as for once I have all the coins.

Australian-And-New-Zealand-Coins,-How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go---First-Edition
First off a decent Florin in Fine/aFine premium cleaned condition

Australian-And-New-Zealand-Coins,-How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go---First-Edition
Then the famous 1921 shilling. These were minted in Sydney and featured a star as there was an idea to issue them in half silver after Britain switched to Half silver in 1920, however this never happened and this coin and subsequent later ones remained sterling (92.5%) silver until 1946.

Just 522k minted, worth thousands in UNC condition a lot less in barely VG condition like this ($50 or so). Still a nice coin.

And fairly average lower coins, The 6d is a bit dark, but at least its not cleaned. Steve sent me that nice halfpenny just a couple of weeks ago

Heads shot shows a large group of coins in the VG to Fine region.

Believe me its all downhill from here

All good mate. I started grading too soft, but I have hardened up now. :)

Just realised and thanks to Steve's coins, 1921 had 3 varieties of 3d, the standard coin with M mintmark (My example has this), the less common no mintmark 1921 and the super rare 1921/22 overdate a coin of just 900 examples and worth $5 - $10k for even a "Good" example.

There are definitely some worn coins there Steve, but NONE will top a sixpence I am showing for 1912, this coin is not even poor, its like aPoor and could even be called nothing as its the most worn thing you have ever seen (It's already in the lowball thread).

Welcome to 1920, what a year! The year Daisy Bates discovered groups of Aboriginals who were being cannibals as they did not get enough government rations.

(Little factoid I found in my huge Chronicle of Australia book).
All silver coins back to 1916 have an M mintmark on them, as they had only been minted in Melbourne since 1916 and most of the Sydney mint output was gold (The famous shilling of 1921 was their first silver piece).

There was no Florin in 1920 - just a very rare pattern.

Australian-And-New-Zealand-Coins,-How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go---First-Edition

1920, I have just 3 coins, a fairly good 3 coins - a shilling and threepence, both easily Fine. The Threepences of this era are often found in better condition than the other silver coins and I have a few in that F - VF level.

Australian-And-New-Zealand-Coins,-How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go---First-Edition
My penny is also decent, but just the bog standard one, none of these dots and dash varieties that proliferate 1919/1920 dated pennies.

Australian-And-New-Zealand-Coins,-How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go---First-Edition
Heads shot again showing some well worn but not overly worn pieces.

Tomorrow we hit the 1910s - the first decade of Australian silver and bronze coinage.

Welcome to the 1910s, and 1919 - no shilling from this year sorry

Australian-And-New-Zealand-Coins,-How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go---First-Edition

I have 5 coins for this year, 2 are pennies. The first two are a worn Halfpenny and 6d, as I said yesterday all the silver has a nice M underneath it, signifying it was minted in Melbourne.

Australian-And-New-Zealand-Coins,-How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go---First-Edition
A fairly nice 3d coin (Plentiful issue)

Australian-And-New-Zealand-Coins,-How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go---First-Edition
My pennies feature the standard penny and dot under the bar variety (Darkened coin).

Australian-And-New-Zealand-Coins,-How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go---First-Edition
Head shots of all coins, but the pennies.

1919 meant that we are in the era of British sterling silver, so no issue if Australian or British coins circulated in New Zealand!

Can't wait to see all yours as I know they must be better than mine!

Someone was loving those sixpences back in the day!

They are definitely the most worn of all the coins. When I think about, most of my Florins are better than my sixpences.

Threepences and Bronze on the other hand fare quite well. Bronze seems to be more durable than silver, and you know those lower value coins were used the most in those days!

Still it is great we are over 100 years back and we are seeing some very old and fascinating coins.
