1897 Locally made Jubilee medal of Victoria, silver 25mm Meant to be worn on a chain, this basic medal was quite desirable and fairly rare. All the usual medals from Spink and Official Jubilee ones were available here, but as far as I know the medal above was the only locally made one. I have nothing for the 1880s, but I do have a single token for the 1870s.

Nice medal, Princetane! From Australia, an 1889-S sovereign: From New Zealand, a Milner & Thompson of Christchurch penny token dated 1881: I found this token with my metal detector in a field near Canterbury in England! When I rubbed off the dirt the first word I saw was 'Canterbury', which made me think at first it was a local 18th-century trading token!

My last one are these 1870s tokens!! 1871 Auckland licenced victuallers tokens for a penny, these were issued and were used at several public bars around Auckland through the 1870s. Most are worn like this. I used to have a Somerville 1857 token as well. I need to start collecting more conders and tokens. We needed these coins as in this era, all our coinage came in barrels from Britain and the rest in sailors and emigrants pockets. There was never enough to go around and until 1883, tokens were permitted.

Thanks, that is me - I love collecting different things. I am definitely going to buy more tokens in years to come. NZ has a huge heritage of them stretching from 1857 through to 1881, when the government started cracking the whip and the Brits started to realise that we need coins and lots of them. Most are not dated, but many can be divided into 1850s and later, the 1850s ones are larger and copper, whilst later coins are smaller and bronze as the British coins were resized. Some tokens I stupidly sold years ago when I was not collecting, 2 H Ashton tokens from 1861, and they show Zelandia holding a scales (I think the camera I had them was a Box brownie judging by the quality) This evil shot shows 4 more, which I have identified as Hague Smith top left, Top right Charles D Barley, Bottom left S Coombes and right Edward Waters, all are 1860s grocers. What is more interesting are the reverses, the top left coin shows Prince albert, the 2nd is lettering and the bottom left is Samuel Coombes complete with Muttonchops and last is the head of a Maori! The Victuallers coins are showing Victoria and say "Born May 19 1819" Steve - don't feel bad, yours and NR's contributions have completely made this thread and the size of your collection of Australia blows me and many other people away! Your generosity too, is beyond reproach. You have kicked serious you know what in this thread

My second and final contribution. Sorry about the blurry edges; I shot this one before I'd quite figured out my photography setup.
