Prethen had the right idea---imo I would not buy a coin like that unless it was graded---

The coin appears to be a genuine far date 1889CC VAM 5A with the die crack through the ONE to the D and a dropped C. The coin also appears to be market acceptable for a straight grade, but I would have some concern about an old cleaning as there are some scattered hairlines. On a second look, I am at 30 to 35 as the left wing is showing a little more wear than I saw on the first look. |

I'm paying $950 for the coin the coin does not look cleaned at all and they said the coin does not look cleaned they for some reason called the coin vf20 but he told me when I was buying it that it would probably come back vf30 or higher if I got it graded they conservatly grade their coins.

It's priced as VF20-25 at $950. Sounds like a fair price. I think it would grade VF30, maybe 35 on a good day.

The low retail price spread is between $1100 to $2700 from VF20-XF40. Unless that "reputable" dealer is willing to sell it at VF20 and backs up the genuineness of the coin (i.e., you send it in to get graded), then any grade increment above 20 is some relatively serious money. So, your grading skills either must be dead on or you simply want to acquire the coin at any price, regardless of risk. And, I still think there's a good chance there might be something wrong with those surfaces.

I'm paying 950 for the coin this is a very reputable dealer buy stuff from them all the time they also backed the authenticity of the coin and told me that I should get it graded I not buy this from ebay or some shady company the company has been in business since 1974 there is nothing wrong with this coin. |

Like Prethen stated; If you were to get this coin certified VF35 by a top tier TPG you could double your money. It's a $1900 coin as a problem-free VF35. |

Wanted to let y'all know they just finished grading this coin I posted awhile back and it's coming back vf30 in the grade.   |

Great news! My opinion is that the high VF-EF grades are almost as nice as high MS in some regards. If I was to build a date set that'd be the grade I'd be looking for.

Same @Grape. Not a big fan of low MS Morgan's, and a high MS set would be out of my wheelhouse. High VF to low AU has a nice eye appeal about it, for me. Maybe one of these days....
Nice example Matthew23! I'd call this VF35, and looking at other PCGS VF30 examples, they were a tad conservative on this one, IMO. If the day comes to sell, I think you'd have no problem getting better than VF30 money.
