I agree as well that it's damage. The missing reeds looks like some kind of rounded abrasive wheel removed the metal reading and the other one looks like it may have been smacked with something (with cogs or notches?) to cause the indentation.
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups.
We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.
