I know for a fact I have obtained more loose change from payphones than Coinstars.

About two years ago I pulled 990 coins out of the Coin Star machine at my local grocery store. I filled up every pocket I had.

I check it every time I go in. My best find was a 1907 Barber dime in October 2020.

I posted about this on the Coinstar link back on March 22, 2019. (I will always remember that fun date.)

The coins were jammed up way up the rejection shoot and just kept falling down into the slot as I scooped them out.

Here's the link. If it doesn't work right, it's on page 240 of the Coinstar Finds! topic.

I believe the coins left behind in the reject slot are fair game, but I would not recommend trying to pry the machine open to get all the coins.

Fortunately, the Coin Star is sort of hidden off in a corner of the lobby with some shelves around it. I can do my dirty work mostly out of sight.

Coinstar machines are the modern equivalent of pay-phone booths back in my day as a kid: Always check the coin return, because you never know if someone left something behind. Reason being that Coinstar machines cannot process silver coins, or things like foreign coins and tokens. I've found my share of ordinary silvers in them, as well as some really odd foreign stuff.

And best of all, you feel like you score whenever you do find something(s) in the coin return.

Also, if you have a whole mess of junk silver, you're better off sending them off to a commercial refinery (as opposed to those "we buy gold" shops) to have them melted down (it's 100% legal to melt USA coins) and get a nice check in return based on the current spot rate for the actual silver content.

Besides coin collecting, my other geeky-dad hobby is metal detecting. At the end of the season, I'd pack up all my junk silver coins and sterling and gold jewelry pieces that I dug up and be rewarded with a nice fat check that paid the rent on occasion.
