If you compare the nickel with the missing crossbar on the "E" to a regular proof 1961 Jefferson nickel, the thickness of the lettering is significantly different. Might the less pronounced (or slim nature) thickness of the lettering be evidence of a weakly hubbed die, which was weak enough that the crossbar was not created in the die? Also Searching around I found that someone has found a 1960 proof Jefferson nickel with this same flawed "E".

I thing the Die broke in the process. Material structure could brake any times. Like a fun of the coins, I say that must be looked an error.

Nice discovery. This must be catalog like exception. If one Die broke or make defaults they change on spot. we see something which not often we can see for this coin's period. Nice piece.

I did not discover this. Back in 2016 someone had found the exact same coin and was asking questions about it on another forum.

How could this be a broken die? An incused part of a die cannot break off.

I am personally still learning about all these different things with coins so I am unsure. This is why I have asked for help on this. What baffles me is the area of the "E's" crossbar is so smooth and perfectly untouched. I would assume you would see some kind of disturbance on the surface where the crossbar is missing. From what I am understanding a Grease Filled Die can cause this kind of a flaw.
