Everyone one is right. Those rolls are too good to be true. Last rolls I bought on E-bay were a long long time ago and I must say they turned out really good. But today no way would I trust the seller unless someone I knew personally. Too many coin rolling machines with old obw empty rolls around. A lot of shady characters on E-bay,you just have to sort them out.

You have a bunch of wheats worth $1.50 a roll. Roll some of them with a semi-key showing at the end of a couple, sell some to some shill accounts and leave feedback about finding a 14 D, or a 09 S, and suddenly the "treasure hunters" out there hoping to get a prize for little or nothing are bidding up these $1.50 rolls to $15 to $25 each. |

Ebay's best "OBW" are the rolls with a 1909 vdb & 1940's Mercury dime both facing out &  . Bunch of scammer |

Speaking as both a long time seller and buyer on ebay, I would suggest that most of the rolls on ebay are fakes that have been manipulated to appear in such a way that the buyer is tempted to buy or bid especially because the end coins that are showing have some value - these should be avoided regardless of the seller. How is this done? Just buy a coin crimping machine and some older looking wrappers and put a few tempting coins at each end or one end. While the coin crimping machines are thankfully not cheap, its was well within a price range for someone who would be tempted to do this on the regular but hopefully has died down somewhat now that many know about it. I do like the suggestion to buy bulk wheat cents as most dealers may only have time to look for the major key dates and may overlook the large amount of secondary varieties and errors that require more time and knowledge to search for. The more errors and varieties the dealer sells, the less likely you are going to find something they didnt. |

It's the equivalent of "salting" a gold mine. There's an old quote usually attributed to Mark Twain (but zero evidence he actually wrote or said it): "A gold mine is a hole in the ground with a liar on top." That holds true for nearly every "special" roll, bag, or lot of coins on ebay. Avoid them all. |

The only luck I've had with I searched rolls have been when I've purchased boxes of coins and rolls from random sellers that likely got it at an auction or such but don't have an interest in them.
I have purchased a couple of bags of wheats and pulled a couple of $50+ coins out of. They were errors, so it makes sense the dealers that pull key dates wouldn't spend the time to search for errors, except maybe the big DDs.
I have purchased a couple rolls that contained Indian Heads, which I was happy to have. Otherwise, definitely a scam. I've also gotten two with modern coins in them. Absolutely re-rolled. Avoid unless you don't mind paying more for some semi-keys or others shown on the ends. ALWAYS bet on the cheapest variety of coin that can be seen. Set a limit and don't go above what you are willing to pay for a "lemon roll."
