Hi all,
Just dipping my toe into the world of varieties and was sniffing through some wheat pennies when I found this oddball. It really looks like a "D" mintmark smashed in with the "5" in the date. Thoughts?

Welcome to the Forum. You've come to a phenomenal place to share and learn. Explore and Enjoy!

Interesting. The top part of it is definitely damage. You can see how the 9 and the 5 took a simultaneous hit. Where there is what might be displaced metal at the bottom tail of the 5 looks intriguing.

Edit: Not a D mint mark imho.

Thanks for the welcome! Yeah - I wish it didnt have the ding across the 9 and 5 - it would be a bit more clear I think.

Displaced metal from a hit, with a die chip in the right place. It's an interesting piece. I'd drop it into a 2x2 as a fun curiosity.

A well placed die chip with a well placed circulation hit

I agree, this is just a die chip lodged in the 5. Nothing to do with the mintmark.
