2 more Florins and both are super key dates. 1941 EF, this coin had a piffling mintage of just 20,000 coins and along with 1938 ranks as the lowest mintage of all the Florins and Fijian predecimal coins (The 1940 ½d was 24,000). I was lucky to get this high grade one quite cheap ($50) 1945 EF+ this was the last silver coin issued by Fiji until the NCLT era and it is also quite scarce at 100k minted (More than 37 - 41 but less than the 1942/43 American coins). These two definitely add to my collection and now I just seek the 37 and 38 coins! I am also referee for Fijian coins over on Numista now, along with Tongan banknotes!

Finally got some time to show some of my pre-decimal banknotes. I only have one 5 pound, no 10 or 20 pounds; but only missing a few others for George VI & Elizabeth 5/-, 10/- & 1 pounds. Don't have any George V notes but have some earlier Emergency issues from WWII. including Grand Pacific Hotel currency tokens.

"1954 was the last year but I am unsure when they stopped being used. It is very hard to find out much info about predecimal Fijian currency beyond Numista and sellers of it, but judging by the condition of most of my halfpennies, they got very little use (Of course I realise most of mine are probably average to above average coins and more worn/munted ones must exist out there) . I would guess the coins were demonitised by the end of 1956 or even earlier."
Dad worked in Suva from 1963 to 1967 & this is when he collected the coins I have, so they were definitely still in use then. I have since collected the banknotes myself, unfortunately he didn't save any of those! Thanks for the link for banknotes, it was very helpful as I had some dates on my Want List that actually don't seem to exist. Cheers.

Wonderful items jvrnz and The string of halfpennies is interesting and was probably the way many village people carried their coins for small purchases. I am sure the pennies and halfpence were issued with holes for that reason as they issued holey low value coins in New Guinea and East and West Africa, but high face value coins were hardly used except by the Whites and Asians there, if Natives got them, they were likely to be banked or hoarded I guess. The fact they are all UNC and all dated 1952 - suggests that they were likely a souvenir item sold to tourists - coins in strings used by natives are likely to be more worn. The hotel chits are very nice and a rare item in high grade, the overprinted £ is outstanding and quite rare now. It was issued on the idea that if the Japanese took Fiji in WW2, the notes would be instantly invalidated. The £5 note is incredible, another very rare piece. Finally I don't happen to know you do I?

Thanks Pricetane. My father collected the coins himself via his job at the Bank of NZ in Suva. He used to watch out for unworn coins as they came through the bank and subbed them out. He had several other strings of different years but sold them later. But you are correct that people used to carry them that way, ie tied with string. He assembled two complete pre-decimal sets (one for me & one for my brother) & kept replacing coins with better examples as he could, until the sets were pretty much all UNC. I live in Cambridge, don't think we know each other in person. I also collect ancient coins, especially those with countermarks. Cheers again.
