OK, photos look successful, so might as well post them...     Shirvanshahs, Derbendi dynasty, Khalilullah I, AR tanka reportedly 856 AH = 1452 AD I can't read the date - probably because I don't know what to look for. Cf. Zeno 19772, reportedly 853 AH, though I can't read the date there either. |

I took a look and am also confused about where to find the date on these ... but coins and confusion seem to be the norm for me when we get back to the 15th century.

I know from Golden Horde coins the dates can be cryptic - right to left, in a random order or the numbers not even next to each other. But at least you can usually find them. |

I'm going to have to go back to Russia for the 1440s. This one's easy to date because his reign was very short: Dmitry Shemyaka Denga, 1446-7  Moscow. Silver, 0.5g. Head, line in front, large dot behind; barbarous circular legend around. Prince with a crown looking forward, K-H in fields; circular legend (Grand Prince Dmitriy) (HPF 605).Edited by JohnConduitt

I have a ton of 1440's. I'll start with the dateable ones. 1444 A-B Hungarian Denar under King Wladislaus I;Huszar 609a,Unger 475b,Pohl 148-7.  1443 W-O Hungarian Denar under King Wladislaus I with the Lithuanian rider;Huszar 607,Unger 472z,Pohl 145-25.  |

Looks like we are off to a great start! Here is a familiar-looking Groschen from Trier. it is dated 1444 AD and attributed as Levinson I-74.   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

Great display of Hungary denars from this decade! Wladislaus was concurrently King of Poland 1434-1444, but none of his Polish coins can be narrowly dated. I need to look for the Huszar 609 for its interesting combination of Polish and Hungarian heraldry. That Trier groschen is pretty sweet, too! My first coin this decade is a well worn undated quattrino of the Duchy of Ferrara (at this time it was a Margravate), reign of Leonello d'Este 1441-1450. Biaggi 757.   Edited by tdziemia

And there's some debate whether the end of the reign was actually in February 1447 rather than December 1446 anyway. Neat coins @EddieDiz! I like those Hungarian denars, though I only have maybe one or two from this century. Neat coins @tdziemia and @Spence as well! Some day I'll get an actual European dated 15th century coin... |
