Walking Back In Time From 1600 To Antiquity By Decades (V3.0)

My last from this decade (and currently my earliest medieval gold, though not for lack of trying )is this Chaise d'Or from the Duchy of Brabant, struck in the name of Holy Roman Emperor Louis of Bavaria. Witte 375. It is known that striking of these began in late 1338 at the Antwerp mint while Edward III of England was staying there for the winter. In 1343 the same type was struck in Antwerp, but bearing Duke John's name and shield, and in 1347 Louis died, so it is likely this coin was struck within the ten year span 1338-1347, and maybe only 1338-1343, though Elsen always lists these only as "a partir de november 1338." At 4.5 grams, it copies both the design and specifications of the French chaise of Philip VI.

I was thinking the same thing....A design I've never seen before. Is that some kind of tabernacle or reliquary?
Is it also possible that in the 1330s he had a Hungarian denar that EddieDiz didn't have (1333)

Had to look it up as to me it looks like abstract art of some sort. In the descriptions of similar coins on acsearch, I see a few interpretations:

1. crested helmet left
2. veiled helmet left, surmounted by tablet, rosette, and plume
2. church with medallion on cross





A rarity to be sure!

Yes, now we're getting to the end of the 'Golden Horde rush' I'll be lucky to have much attributable to a decade, let alone a year. I have a few dirhams in 500 years or so.



I have one esterlin (well, a copy of an Edward III penny), which happens to be from this decade.

720 -s a frozen date believed to have been struck for as long as 30-40 years without change of date, design, or ruler's name, and were in circulation for more than 100 years which may be a reason that it is not easy to find it in a good shape:)
