Here is my last coin from this decade: another Sasanian Drachm. This one was minted roughly in 528 AD at Meshan. I have attributed it as Göbl III/2 #185.   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

And finally, here is a Nummus from the Vandals that can be dated to between 523 and 530 AD. It was issued under the authority of King Hilderich and is attributed as Wroth 9 and Grierson I.24.   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

Here is an AE Follis from the Byzantine Empire that dates to between 518 and 527 AD. It was minted at Nicomedia and is the only coin I have to post for this decade. I also note that I have a hole in my OFED collection for 500-509 AD so am hoping for some broader participation again once we move back another decade. I'll probably be too late with this one, but I'll try to post it anyway. I had the post window open and then forgot...   Byzantine Empire, Justin I (518-527) AE pentanummium (5 nummi), Antioch mint Obverse: DN IVSTINVS PP AV, bust of Justin I right Reverse: Tyche of Antioch seated within shrine, river god Orontes? swimming below, retrograde epsilon to left Sear Byzantine 111, Numista 142661This is sometimes said to be the last Roman pagan type; in fact there's a very scarce version [SB 133] with portraits of both Justin and Justinian from their brief interregnum, and an even scarcer (or at least hard to distinguish) version from the sole reign of Justinian [SB 240], which truly deserves to be called the last. It is, however, apparently the last Roman pagan reverse type. (I've recently finally found online an example of the Justinian type that I was prepared to admit actually mentioned Justinian in the legend. Unfortunately I forgot where I found it.) |

Very nice addition to the thread @j1m--always great to have your participation but especially now as I know the relatively recent diaspora must make keeping track of your coins difficult.

All those coins are currently physically located at my former home in Moscow (which I hope to visit again eventually, but there's no current specific plans); I have no pre-1600 coins in here, and I doubt I'd get any soon, because they need to be officially registered and AFAICT that's a mess of paperwork. I do have several hundred uncropped phone pics (mostly of unidentified ancients) from my photographing streaks in late 2021/early 2022, and some day I might try to figure out what's hiding on those... |

Sorry for neglecting this thread for over a month. We are looking for coins minted between 500 and 510 AD. This is my first gap decade, so I'm on the sidelines unless I happen to pick up something to post.

And also sorry to have missed the decade. But maybe a fortunate thing. I have a 512 - 517 Byzantine Follis - Constantinople Large M, 2 stars and cross - triangle/CON D N ANASTA SIVS P P AVG Anastatius I However, it is one of the five coins I purchased which includes the fake JOHN V. This follis exhibits the same sort of material and look as the John V, and now looking at the other three, I suspect that they are all stinkers, as you so rightly term them. More lessons learned, all on the same day! (The ebay seller was akhyu-0) The Ox moves slowly, but the Earth is patient.
