Quote: To get us started, here is a Sasanian Drachm issued on behalf of Khusru I. It was minted at Artishir in about 564 AD. I have attributed it as Göbl I/2. Spence, that's a stunner of a coin. I know that I should get out more, but I've never seen one like that before. Thanks for sharing.

Hey thx for those kind words of encouragement @ttkoo--I suspect that there are quite a few lurkers on this thread, but it is always nice to hear some feedback. As you probably know, Sasanian coins tend to have ascension dates on them and therefore their date of minting can be narrowed down very nicely. One of these days, I should probably start a separate thread of just Sasanian coins so that we can watch the crown/headgear transformation from one ruler to the next. My other coin from this decade is a Byzantine Pentanummium. It was minted in Constantinople between 565 and 578 AD. I believe that it shows monogram #8/second officina and I have attributed it as Sear #363.

I've posted this coin a few times before--it is my first Sasanian Drachm (and I believe was my first coin ever from the dark ages/early medieval time period). It was minted 551 AD and has been in my collection for approximately 2.6% of its lifetime. It was minted in Guey under the authority of Khursu I. It was attributed as Mitchiner 1050 and Gobl I/2.

You gotta stop posting such nice coins. That devil on my left shoulder keeps pointing at them and whispering "maybe just one?"

Sorry but you can't do just one Sasanian Drachm.

Seems like we are on a collision course with V2.0 of this thread.
Last call for coins from the 550s. Starting tomorrow morning, let's go with coins minted starting in the decade of the 540s.

Glad to see something else from the Byzantine Empire! Nice contribution @john. Here is an Ostrogoth 2.5 Nummia issued on behalf of King Baduila. It was minted in Ticinium between 542 and 545 AD (some place the timing as wide as 541 to 552 AD). It is attributed as Demo 242, COI 94, and MEC 1, 163.

This Byzantine Half-Siliqua is a bicentennial commemorative and dates to circa 530 AD. I have attributed it as Vagi 3051 and Bendall 8-c. Interestingly, I have been able to trace the provenance of this coin back several auctions to Thomas Bentley Cederlind, a Massachusetts-based numismatist who left us about 8 years ago. I never met him, but he sounds like a pretty knowledgeable guy and a loss for our hobby. Here is a link to his memorial wall: https://www.westfordfuneralhome.com.../TributeWall

I wasn't sure if I should post this one for the 530s or 540s... This tiny AE nummus of Justinian I has to be one of two similar issues - either VOT XIII (539-540 AD) or VOT XIIII (540-541 AD). On my coin the relevant part is too deeply patinated for me to tell for sure which one it is. The photos make it look like a clear XIII, but IIRC in hand it's a lot less obvious.

Definitely a nice contribution @j1m! Let's plan to drop back to the 520s starting tomorrow morning, so last call on coins minted starting in the decade of the 530s.

Any day that I can post an Ostogoth coin is a good one. This 2.5 Nummia was minted in Rome between 527 and 534 AD. It is attributed as Demo 180 and has quite severe edge chipping--bringing the diameter to only about 10 mm.

Here is a Solidus from the Byzantine Empire. It was minted under the authority of Justinian I somewhere in the range of 527 through 565 AD. I have attributed it as Sear 140.
