In 2017, Canada celebrated the 150th anniversary of its Confederation. In 1867, the British North American colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the Province of Canada (which divided into Ontario and Quebec) united to form the Dominion of Canada. The four provinces were soon joined in the Confederation by Manitoba and the Northwest Territories in 1870, British Columbia in 1871 and Prince Edward Island in 1873. Over time, the original Northwest Territories region was divided to form the Yukon (1898), Alberta and Sasakatechewan (1905) and Nunavut (1999). The last "new" province to join the Confederation was Newfoundland in 1949. The Royal Canadian Mint (R C M) created an extensive line of collector coins to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Canada, including several 36 millimeter (mm) silver dollars that feature a map of the country. As I collect Canada's 36 mm silver dollars (SDs), I added these Confederation SDs to my collection: Note: The first three share the same design, one is unenhanced, one is selectively-gold-plated, one is enameled; the fourth has a somewhat similar map-based design. but with some notable differences (including the addition of red paint (not enamel) to the "150" and interlinked miniature maple leafs in the background to give a globe-like appearance). There are a number of other R C M issues from 2017 that feature a map of the country, but I think I'll stop with these silver dollars.

1994 Portugal 200 escudos: The coin shows the division of South America between Portugal and Spain, as agreed by the Treaty of Tordesillas, with Portugal claiming what later became Brazil.
