The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Their goal is to achieve food security for all and make sure that people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives. Realizing the importance of coins as an educational media, the FAO launched a Money and Medals program in 1968, aimed at conveying its message of the urgent need to increase food and agricultural production. Since then the FAO has encouraged governments to use their coinage for this educational purpose. Numista lists 735 FAO coins and medals.
