Quote: I actually got this one from my Grandmother. I would like to get a better condition one but they are expensive and in generally poor shape. This is a very large and heavy coin. A nice sentimental lowball!

Today you get the lowest denomination coin ever issued in the Escudo era. The 1 centavo. As the Escudo at the time of the Euro was worth ~ 1/2 of a Euro cent the 1 centavo which was 1/100 of an escudo was worth 0.005 cents. Issuer: Portugal Period: First Republic (1910-1926) Type: Standard circulation coin Years: 1917-1922 Value: 1 Centavo (0.01 PTE) Currency: Escudo (1911-2001) Composition: Bronze Weight: 3 g Diameter: 19 mm Shape: Round Technique: Milled Orientation: Medal alignment Demonetized: Yes References: KM# 565 Mintage (1921): 4,492,000 The key in 1922 where only 66 were made.

So after tomorrow is this it? Well actually no. I found 4 more than I want, so I'll try to work out a deal on Monday (the dealer is closed today). And I really really want the 1914 Escudo which was a commemorative of the founding of the republic, sadly I only found that one in ebay, but as I still have to pay off the Peace and Morgan dollars, it maybe a little while. So the next 4 maybe it for a little while. This has actually been a cool journey in exploring the coins of my birth country. Personally I found most coins attractive and for the condition/mintage the prices were reasonable to me. I also pretty much cleaned out the dealer I use for a lot of my coin purchases. The coin for Monday shows how much bad economic polices devalue the currency. But also show how pretty coins could be, unlike our current period of dead presidents and monarchs. This doesn't mean the journey ends, its just takes a little detour.

And the final one I currently have. I started off with silver and I'll end today with silver. Like I stated before the Escudo was set-up to be one of the worlds great currency but financial mismanagement caused inflation which robbed the escudo of its initial goodwill. Sadly the coins of the first republic where pretty nice. Today's coin is dime sized and reminds me a little of our winged dime. This was only a 1 year design. Issuer: Portugal Period: First Republic (1910-1926) Type: Standard circulation coin Year: 1915 Value: 10 Centavos (0.1 PTE) Currency: Escudo (1911-2001) Composition: Silver (.835) Weight: 2.5 g Diameter: 20 mm Shape: Round Technique: Milled Orientation: Medal alignment Demonetized: Yes References: KM# 563 Mintage (1915): 3,418,000

Thank you all! I hope you enjoyed the history! To me a old coin is a chance to experience the history of the time it was made.
Sadly you won't be get ridding of me, the coin shop took my offer for the 4 coins! I really wanted one of the coins which is silver and they accepted my offer. They will ship on Wednesday so hopefully by end of the week I'll post the last 4. I also sold off the extras of the 2021 Morgans so maybe in a few weeks I can get the 1914 escudo.
