@hfjacinto. If this were an opera, a standing ovation would be in order. Thank you so much. A fascinating journey taken and a great story told.

Thanks Hokie fan, Slerk and ttkoo @numis, I only have the euro cents that I posted. So I don't have the coin you ask about. Although it's pretty nice. I don't know who Marco Portugal was either until I Wikipedia him. Nice coin and it's pretty. I may add it to the list.

Here is the first. My local coin shop is on the look out for coins/currency from Portugal, so he calls me when some come in. A recent purchase had coins from all over the world with a few coins from Portugal. I picked up 2 as I didn't bring much cash and made a deposit on a slabbed one. The coins I purchased were in a 2 by 2 for decades. The clear window on a few were cloudy which limited what you could see, but for $3, I took a chance. The coin had a little verdis which with the help of Verdi Care 99% was removed with no issue. The coin has King Carlos the 1st of Portugal. Born September 8 1863, died February 1, 1908. Due to the ending of the monarchies in Europe, Carlos 1 had an intense education and was prepared to rule as a constitutional monarch. In 1883, he traveled to Italy, the United Kingdom, France and Germany, where he increased his knowledge of the modern civilization of his time. On 1 February 1908, the royal family was returning to Lisbon from the Ducal Palace of Vila Viçosa in Alentejo. On their way to the royal palace, the open carriage with Carlos I and his family passed through the Terreiro do Paço fronting on the river. In spite of recent political unrest there was no military escort. While they were crossing the square at dusk, shots were fired from amongst the sparse crowd by two republican activists: Alfredo Luís da Costa and Manuel Buíça. Buíça, a former army sergeant and sharpshooter, fired five shots from a rifle hidden under his long overcoat. The king died immediately, his heir Luís Filipe was mortally wounded, and Prince Manuel was hit in the arm. The queen alone escaped injury. The two assassins were killed on the spot by police; an innocent bystander, João da Costa, was also shot dead in the confusion. The royal carriage turned into the nearby Navy Arsenal, where, about twenty minutes later, Prince Luís Filipe died. Several days later, the younger son, Prince Manuel, was proclaimed king of Portugal. Who 2 years later would be forced to abdicate. The coin. Issuer: Portugal King Carlos I (1889-1908) Type: Standard circulation coin Years: 1891-1892 Value: 20 Reis Currency: Real (decimalized, 1835-1910) Composition: Bronze Weight: 12 g Diameter: 30 mm Thickness: 2.5 mm Shape: Round Orientation: Coin alignment References: KM533 Mintage: 15,411,000 While these are common in low grade, UNC and BU really shoot up in Price.

Quote: Just send them to me, I'll look after them for you. Thank you Steve, but it might be to costly to ship to AU. Sadly I'll have to keep them in the US. Thanks for the offer. Quote: I consider it a bit of a milestone when I need to buy a new coin box or currency album. So, congrats! I'll let Elizabeth know that I'm buying a new box due to your advice she doesn't like I have friends on the forum, she might ban me from posting. And then Hokie who will give you grief for your beautiful coins and currency? How many "WOW", "Most beautiful coin ever" do you want to hear? You need a "Go collect gold coin bank notes from CA and stop buying fractionals" every once in a while Now that I beat up my friends a little time for the next coin. Today's coin is a beautiful RB uncirculated V reis. To show how low value this coin is, you would need 400 of these to make it equal 1 US cent. But I digress. The coin features Dom Luís I (born on October 31 1838, in Lisbon - died October 19, 1889, in Cascais), known as The Popular and King of Portugal from 1861 to 1889. The second son of Queen Maria II and her consort, King Ferdinand, he acceded to the throne upon the death of his elder brother King Pedro V. I believe he was known as the popular due to the many mistresses and illegitimate children he fathered. Because otherwise Luís's reign was one of domestic stagnation as Portugal fell ever further behind the nations of western Europe in terms of public education, political stability, technological progress and economic prosperity. He did have a killer moustache though. The coin. Issuer: Portugal King Luís I (1861-1889) Type: Standard circulation coin Years: 1882-1886 Value: 5 Reis Currency: Real (decimalized, 1835-1910) Composition: Bronze Weight: 2.8 g Diameter: 20.5 mm Thickness: 1.2 mm Shape: Round Orientation: Coin alignment #8593;#8595; Demonetized: Yes References: KM525 Mintage: 5,200,000
