I like that. 400 to the cent? I'll have a dollar bag of them please.

Did a quick calculation, a $1 bag of those back then, would be worth $291 in scrap bronze now.

Back in the 70's one could still get hard candy for 5-10 centavos each (50/100 Reis). While the coins now aren't worth anything (except numismatic value) they had some monetary worth until at least the 70's.

Yesterday we had a 5 Reis of Dom Luis 1 in uncirculated. Today you get Dom Luis 1 in 20 Reis, it would only take 100 of these to equal a US 1 cent. This one is also uncirculated and even graded. The coin in the slab. The coin, the reverse is slightly rotated. Issuer: Portugal King Luís I (1861-1889) Type: Standard circulation coin Years: 1882-1886 Value: 20 Reis Currency: Real (decimalized, 1835-1910) Composition: Bronze Weight: 11.74 g Diameter:30 mm Thickness: 2.11 mm Shape: Round Orientation: Coin alignment Demonetized: Yes References: KM527 Mintage: 4,573,000 The 1886 is the lowest mintage of the 5 year issue.

Great coins, congratulations on your purchases. Quote: Just so you know I'm running out of space, may need a new coin case. Ooh you use flip too, I'm not the only one. Is flip cracking ? Coins look big, if the plastic is hard, then they can crack.

Hi Slerk,
None of my flips are cracking. I also purchased all new ones for the coins so I would be unhappy if they were cracking.

And sadly I have no more coins after this one. Doesn't mean I won't get any but for today, this is it. And while its a repeat, its a slight upgrade to what I had. Today you get a beautiful MS 10 escudos from 1954. The observe features the Caravela (Caravele). The caravel was developed in about 1450, based on existing fishing boats under the sponsorship of Henry the Navigator of Portugal, and soon became the preferred vessel for Portuguese explorers like Diogo Cão, Bartolomeu Dias or Gaspar and Miguel Corte-Real, and by Christopher Columbus. They were agile and easier to navigate than the barca and barinel, with a tonnage of 50 to 160 tons and 1 to 3 masts. Being smaller and having a shallow keel, the caravel could sail upriver in shallow coastal waters. With the lateen sails attached, it was highly maneuverable and could sail much nearer the shore, while with the square Atlantic-type sails attached, it was very fast. Its economy, speed, agility, and power made it esteemed as the best sailing vessel of its time. As a vessel for exploration it was great but its limited cargo capacity limited it to mostly exploration, a larger and more robust ship was needed for trade. This led to the development of the Nau (Carrack) which was used for trade (including the transfer of slaves from Africa to the new world). The coin. I'm still looking for one from the prior design (KM582) Issuer: Portugal Period: Second Republic (1926-1974) Type: Standard circulation coin Years: 1954-1955 Value: 10 Escudos (10 PTE) Currency: Escudo (1911-2001) Composition: Silver (.680) Weight: 12.5 g Diameter: 30 mm Thickness: 2.1 mm Shape: Round Orientation: Coin alignment Demonetized: Yes References: KM586 Mintage (1954):5,764,350

Thank Hokie!! Sadly the more you learn about the history of what the coins Celebrate there are dark periods also not generally spoken about. Like that quote "History is written by the winners" I was reminded of recently. ;)
