One more to add to the list. This coin doesn't have a story, but it does have beautiful purplish hue. 1867 was the first year of issue.
Fantastic!

If I may. I can provide a little story about the V reis 1867.

The 1867 and 1868 V reis were also minted for use in São Tome, a portuguese colony in Africa. 737000 coins for use in Europe and 300000 in the islands of São Tome. Same type different years was also minted for Angola. They later mixed in trade. This coin may have traveled far when it circulated.

I reached out to my local dealer in Portugal and he offered me a hefty premium over what I paid for it. He has had only 1 appear in the shop since 1986. PCGS only has graded 2 with mine being the top pop. I haven't found any graded by NGC.

Did you buy this in the USA? The story I heard about matte finish in some commemoration of the 1950s and 1960s was that they were made by order to export for some coin dealers there. May be easier to find outside Portugal than here.

I purchased the 1953 Matte 20$00 in the US. That may answer why I've seen a few of the matte proofs (the navigator series) for sale in the us but never in Portugal.

Are they collected in Portugal? The dealer I spoke to is looking for them but rarely gets them into the store.

@hfjacinto,

I just noticed there is a large collection of graded coins from Portugal being auctioned on Catawiki. I suggest you have a look. There are some really nice examples.

I recall hearing that some coins of the navigator series were done in matte by order from a coin trader, for export to the US. It was a patina achieved with some acid bath after the coin was struck. Done in the mint. Cannot recall who told me this. So this series in a matte version is official.

Yes there must be collectors who want them.

Other coins in matte may have been done outside the mint. Maybe next week I can ask for the story from an old head of the mint.

@jecz79,

Where you able to find out any more information on the matte proofs?

Sorry, no. This most recent meeting the person who could tell me about that did not attend.
May find him in the summer. I remain curious also.
