Looks almost like heat damage to me

Yes, exposure to an environmental agent or two caused the copper plating to tone. In this case, likely a liquid-based agent--got one side, but not the other. Not uncommon. Among other coins, I collect well-toned cents, and have dozens of toned shield cents. If you like it, keep it.

Could be heat damage or general handling. Nothing special I'm afraid. Keep searching!

I knew the penny was to new to be natural toned already but didnt know what would cause that.

Altered coins are just face value coins. They are an attempt often make make it look like a mint error, but is really damage to the coin. When they figure out they failed. What to do with the damaged coin. "Spend it!" Just like a wrecked car is not a factory error, but damage, that is what is being pulled from circualtion, coins that are post strike damaged, and they are not mint errors.

I would think it would take much longer to tone a coin like that. I think it was, as others above have stated, that it was artificially toned .
