Greetings - I live in an area with only two coin shows a year, so I just wanted to share my purchase from this past weekend:

Don't really collect them, but I never pass up a chance to smash a penny.

I don't have multiples to select from, so you get what's available. Would like you comments on this coin. Thanks.

Hi Tepritts,

I might suspect this was a proof based on the very sharp strike and the hint of cameo contrast that I see on the wheat ears. However, there is no mirror quality to the fields so I'm pretty sure it's a business strike.

The color is bright enough to qualify as "red". I see a few small scratches on Lincoln's hair and shoulder. I presume the tiny white specs are dust, not part of the coin. Overall, it looks MS-64 Red-ish. Pretty nice!

Thanks. I had doubts it was a proof in the 2X2. The rim didn't look quite wide enough for me. But after I took it out of the holder, I am pretty sure it is a Proof coin. Hard to describe, but it is wider/heavier/thicker looking than a business strike. It appears to have the same finish as my other proof cents of that era.

Would appreciate comments on the mirror finish for proof cents from the 30's, 40's, and 50's

The tiny white flecks are poor single source lighting. I'm still working on better photography.

If it turns out to be a business strike, some dealer is twenty dollars happier, and I have a very nice 1950 Lincoln Cent for my collection.

Hard for me to tell. I have a 50 Proof that has hair detail like yours, but it doesn't really have the flow lines that I think I see in the fields. I also am no a Lincoln expert.

It looks like a proof that's either been mis-handled or lighly circulated.

I'd go PR63RD. $20 seems like a fair price based on it's condition.

I was thinking about coin to that coin show, but I do live three hours south. Kind of a big commute for me just to spend two hours or so at a coin show.

I'll visit hot springs some day.

hmmm...I am scratching my head on this one. Based on the pics, I would have to say either MS63 or a Circulated or like bherring1964 said a mis-handled proof. I like the strike of the rim and the field quality, but I'm just not sure about the discoloring near LIBERTY and "0" in 50. If itis a proof there def is some wear near the check bone and beard. Just my opinion.

Overall I like the coin, the question is do you like it is what matters.

Thanks for the comments. Bottom line is I like the coin whether it's a proof or business strike. It's a well struck coin which we don't see many anymore. The new production method may be economical and faster, but the quality of the coins especially the "strikes", if you can call them "strikes", has suffered in my opinion.
