I recently acquired some Cook Islands sets from 1987. I don't typically look for foreign coinage so I don't know much about these and can't seem to find anything online about these sets or their worth. They are very cool to look at and have great design, but all I can find online are proof and uncirculated sets from the 70's from Cook Island. I have yet to find any information about any sets from the 80's. Can anyone help me? I'd love to know more about them and their worth. It looks like these are from before they adopted New Zealand currency as their own. I'll upload some images to this post. Thanks!!

New Zealand currency has always been legal tender in the Cook Islands; the Cook Islands dollar circulates alongside the NEw Zealand dollar at par. The coins remain in circulation, nominally now denominated in New Zealand dollars.

If you Google "Cook Islands proof set 1987" and "Cook islands mint set 1987", you will find numerous sellers on ebay and elsewhere. Apparently, the 1987 sets are reasonably scarce; proof sets are around $130-$200 and Unc sets around $40.

Cook Islands used the British pound until 1933 and then the New Zealand one.

In 1967 they adopted the New Zealand dollar as their own in decimalisation and in 1972 they got their own coinage, pegged to the New Zealand dollar.

The first coins from 1972 to 1985 had different designs from the post 1987 coins which had Tene on them.

In 1990 they got $2 and $5 dollar coins and in 2015 the 10c, 20c and 50c coins were shrunk in size and made out of stainless steel like NZ.

The Cook Islands $ has parity with New Zealand. They use their own currency as well - they have $3, $10, $20 and $50 notes.

There was a 1970 $1 coin issued by New Zealand in the name of the Cook Islands, but this is counted as a New Zealand coin.

I state this as many confuse it as a Cook Islands coin.

Cook Islands coins don't seem to be overly popular but the sets from the 1970s seem to have been made in much higher numbers than those in the late 1980s/early 1990s.
Not sure what the mintages on the later sets.
