Hi,

So Ive already beed advised years ago by ICCS not to clean a coin with a silver cloth. (Yes they contacted me to tell me that because I sent a coin in and destroyed the grade by doing this). So how could I clean this? Is it worth sending in with nicks? What grading is it?

You could try acetone and a q-tip to gently remove those dark spots but it looks like there is probably pitting underneath them. I would not bother sending it for grading unless it was MS65 or higher which I don't think this is. Looks to be AU possibly low MS but hard to tell. I imagine it would come back with a details grade as well which would lower the value a fair amount. In this condition it would most likely only be worth around melt value.

If you even want to remove gunk from a coin best practice is to safely soak the coin in acetone. Be sure it is away from any flames or electrical outlets and out of the sun, also make sure it's in a sealable glass container because the fumes can be harmful and are highly flammable.

Good advice, can't hurt, but I wouldn't get your hopes up. Not the best-looking coin to start with.

Do not clean and do not send in.
Unless it is in higher MS condition, it is only worth bullion value.

It's worth about $18 as scrap silver. It's seen some rough use.

You can experiment with cleaning however you choose.
This is a bullion value coin.
Whatever you do won't affect it's melt value, it'll still be 80% silver.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...
