Ebay Applies Sales Tax To Postage Stamps

otto Pillar of the Community United States 1326 Posts	Posted 03/30/2022 1:35 pm I send some of my lower value sales using postage stamps and have found that I get charged for my state's sales tax. I don't know about other states' policies, but mine does not. I enquired to ebay some time back and got nowhere. They just did it to me again, without any basis. Zurie Pillar of the Community United States 5661 Posts	Posted 03/30/2022 2:49 pm Sales tax is applied to the total sales price (including any shipping charged to the buyer) based on the buyer's home state, not the seller. So if you sell to someone in a state that charges sales tax on coins, ebay will add the tax to the amount paid by the buyer. I doubt it has anything to do with how you pay the shipping cost. I just purchased a coil of 100 Forever stamps and was charged my state's sales tax, though there is no tax on stamps here. As @nss-52 noted, it might have to do with in which category the stamps were listed. The easy solution would be to just buy them from a USPS post office to avoid the tax. I have never been charged taxes on stamps locally - ever. I do admit that I'm still saving money. But the idea of it bugs me. Report this Post to the Staff
