I understand this as there is a very mistaken mindset nowadays that grading companies are THE ultimate authorities on coins. This is b/c their marketing departments do their job so well. Take the time to read the following.

Here is a reality check about grading companies vs. what people coming into the hobby just assume about them b/c of seeing so many slabbed coins being sold. Reading this will help you make better educated decisions concerning these companies and your hard earned cash.

Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for life. Here is some beginners fishing tackle. Its worth your time to read.

I was also wondering about errors. I was hoping maybe they would but the price sheet shows it as an extra fee. It's shockingly expensive. To be honest, I didn't realize what I had until I opened it. It looked fantastic behind the 2x2. I am bummed out bc I thought it was uncirculated. It looked great. lol. Thanks again for the great info!

Me I grad my coins myself. Years ago on the good times of grading I take the courses (more to know the grading mentality and standards). If you buy a coin with 10$ which is worth 600$ maybe it is worth to send, looking that the marketing is done by TPG is to buy certify not raw. The rest do not worth. Is not only the price at around 50$ but also your time, effort and in majority of cases the pain of the disappointing been.

Now are two different scales of grading: 1. BU and less is more technical and 2. Gem which it is market grading. Hope you understand. I think Early has a good article on this.

Other point is who is able to do in this moment good job (not say perfect because do not exist): US the most elastic and point is ANACS and in Canada CCCS. The rest are marketers. For the Errors or varieties, at this moment in US is VSS (they do not grad) and some sites like Wexler, and Co. In Canada is CCCS and some very recognized specialists. The rest, if you do not mention exact what you look for you can forgot and even in that case you do not know what come back.

If I compare with Europe I can say in Grading here we make marketing and not more. I just receive from Italy and Germany two graded coins and come with explanation of the grad, here probably you will pay other good 50$ to have. Choice.

Personally I use my own slabs (my design manufactured) and I am happy with. I have friends who are collectors and I tell you: No one look for the grad give by any Grader. Better then 2x2 are caps or just slab yourself, and protect your collection.

Like collector I buy the coin and I do not pay for the slab.

Thanks for your info! You (and everyone else here) have a lot of years worth of experience and it's so helpful to beginners. Yes, I understood. For example the Nickel was supposed to be Gem Uncirculated so I was expecting a fairly high mint state, if I understood correctly that gem would be a higher grade. So, I thought it would be worth it to grade. But it seems like there is no reason to do it even with a high grade coin, like you said. I am still disappointed that I was expecting a nice example and got an AU coin.
I love that you make your own slabs, that's very cool! And I appreciate your wisdom as well. I really had no idea about all the info I learned here today. It certainly changes my perspective entirely. Thank you so much!

Earle42 nailed it.

CCF is here to help before you waste your hard earned $$. we arent the end all be all in grading but you will get sage advice from collectors with decades of experience and probably grade as good if not better than a TPG. just take the average grade posted and you are going to be pretty spot on what it would come back as. you dont need them for the average collector

You are one of my favorite posters. You laid out a series of valid points and reasons NOT to waste time or money getting coins graded. I know this doesn't align with the way some in this hobby think, but it's refreshing to see someone put together a post like this. I may have to share on it a sports cards forum as it applies there as well (and they are 100x worse when it comes to falling for this).

If you simply like the feel of a slab in your hands and the look of the them, here are a few of my homemade ones. Can do whatever I care with for the label. I use these for coins that might hold enough value to need better protection than a 2x2, but economically it may not make sense to submit them either. Obviously, I am only looking to impress myself, as I have no plans on selling these anytime ever. These are great for heirloom coins that hold a little value but I can let the kiddoes hold them and hear sorties without stressing too much.

NICE!!! Thanks for sharing! I love that you have the extra and personalized protection for your valued favorites! I am not at the level of making my own, I have no idea what I'm doing lol but it's such a great way to care for your collection. I don't have any coins of value, except maybe one.. and not much value if at all. And I haven't put it in a 2x2 yet because it deserves more lol. But I can probably find a generic slab for that one. Actually, great idea, I will post that one here for grading next! Thanks! lol

If you are looking for more than a staple type 2x2 you can use an Air-Tite capsule. They also have plastic 2x2's and generic plastic slabs.

Thanks! I'll check for Air-Tite. I almost ordered the mylar flips but then cancelled. A generic slab would surely work!

Very soon I will put on the market the slabs on the photo at 1.5$ with choice of the inner by denomination. The second mini slab fit for the moment only from 1C to halves (this it is adjustable. We work to do in normal slab dimensions and the slabs cartable at 15$ for 36 slabs or only pages at 2.5$ each. everything is free PVC and ready for vacuum and ultrasonic seal.

Nickel was supposed to be Gem Uncirculated

A quick lesson in buying coins. It is extremely rare to find a seller who tells the honest truth in listings. They will mix up buzz words to fool the inexperienced.

'Choice gem uncirculated pq blast white mint luster' blah blah blah

High quality pictures is all you have to go by, period. Even this rule is difficult as even good large clear photos take education and experience to determine what is hiding in those photos.

Too much glare or light, looks shinny and new! Nope, hiding scratches and nicks.

Contrast turned up, so much detail! Nope, something hiding in the shadows.

All sorts of tricks. Once you start buying some coins and start comparing them to the photos when you have the coin in hand you will start to recognize what type of photos you can 'mostly' rely on.

Btw, an honest listing will list uncirculated coins in these categories:
BU/uncirculated = low mint state
Choice = mid mint state up to MS65
Gem = ms66 or above.

Now how many Gems do you see listed? What percentage are actual gems? Can we even get to 1%? Probably not.

Good luck, have fun, and use this site as I have for the past decade! It's a great site and hobby!

Really good to know! I will remember this advice. Maybe I ought to stick to my Wheat cent rolls for now LOL. I love them so much, it's really fun for me. I think many of us buying for the first time on ebay are either learning or not. I'm glad I come here to check in. Great advice! And I'm trying to get the seller to pay for return shipping since he offered to send me a new one. No response yet lol. Live and learn! Thank you!

Be careful with those ebay wheat rolls too! I spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on them. Now I have tons of worthless wheats and a few ok ones that need upgrading. They were fun but for the money, I just should have boaght the individual coins I wanted for much less.
