What a difference photography can make! I've won an 1813 8 Reales, described as "Broad Struck", but the term "Tampered Planchet Strike" fits this coin better (thanks, Swamperbob! ). Seller described it as "actually XF wear" and his images showed lustre. I wanted a sample of this mint error from that time to better understand the process and glad that I did. Here are sellers' scanned pictures: The thing is that this coin does look like that if you are looking straight down at it and up-close. However, if you move it away about 7 inches and tilt it slightly towards the light .... well - you get this: Fascinating piece! I love the character of these large coins. ~Roman

Not sure if anyone reads this far back in a post but has anyone tried typing in Camera Shows in places like Google? I go to camera shows frequently and have purchased all my camera equipment there. I know have 6 dgital cameras and never paid more than $50 for one. My best is a Fuji S7000 which takes up to 12 Megapixels. I just purchased a Vivitar 6150S for $25. Several others for even less. At most camera shows around here there are experts that will check out any used ones but so far I've purchased all mine brand new, in the box. No camera store, web site, discount store, department store could ever compete with a camera show.

Thanks, Frank! I have just acquired two 60W reveal bulbs that I can't wait to try out. I am getting close to having proper lighting :)

Ok, my scenario. I am looking for an excellent digital camera that will do just about everything I can throw at it. I am looking for a all-purpose camera that will take good outdoor, travel, etc. photos as well as handle close-in macro coin photography. At first I thought all I would look at was digital SLR cameras. Is this the best route, or am I limiting my search too much and passing up digitals that will do just as good a job as the SLR's? I had narrowed my search to 3 cameras. Nikon D70s, Canon Rebel Xt eos and Panasonic Lumix dmc-fz50k. I know the Panasonic isn't an SLR but it's features seemed to surpass the much more expensive SLR's and it also uses the SD card instead of the CF cards of the other 2. My portable DVD/JPEG player accepts SD cards and not CF cards so it might be wise to make sure the camera uses one that is compatible with my viewer. Ok my main question for the experts, which I hope someone can answer. Can or is it possible for the $500 Panasonic to perform as well as the $700+ Canon and Nikon SLR's for what I am looking for? The 12x optical zoom (they compare it to a 33-400mm SLR zoom)of the Panasonic appears to blow away the 18-70mm zoom of the others.

Steve, I'll be in an excellent position to answer your question in detail in a while - I just took delivery of a Canon 350D (Rebel XT) tonight, and I already own an S2 IS, Canon's equivalent of the Panasonic. My gut feeling is, the Panasonic will give you results that are much closer to the dSLR's than the price difference would indicate. My S2 IS is an enormously talented camera, just as good at the long end of the 12x zoom (due to the image stabilization) as it is at the macro end (where it'll focus on something touching the lens). My reasons for buying the XT are more complex than just dissatisfaction with the S2; I'm perfectly happy with it. The only fault I can find in it is a slight problem with macro focus in really low light, and that wasn't annoying enough to want to replace it. You certainly won't find a dSLR that will provide results, with one piece of glass, that will compare to the Panasonic. You're going to end up buying multiple lenses , and spend a bunch more money (the macro lens I bought for my XT cost much more than the complete S2 IS did), for results which won't be better until you get really serious about photography. On the road, you will have a one-piece camera, not requiring lens changes and add-on flashes and a duffel bag to carry stuff. So, unless you've got your heart set on a dSLR, I'd say get the Panasonic (or a Canon S3 IS), and spend the $500 you'll save on a coin to take pics of.

I got a D50 about a month ago (not for coins) and I love it. I love a lot of things about a dSLR in general. But, I am glad I didn't jump right into it without already having learned quite a bit of basics from my Panasonic. But, I am enjoying photography as a hobby and wanted something to grow a bit with.
A dSLR makes some things easier from a technical stand point. Higher ISO's, faster lenses, no shutter lag or viewfinder drop out, overall better dynamic range. A number of nuances. But, they are not point and shoots and, in and of themselves, will not lead you to better photographs.
Just my opinion but, unless you enjoy photography as a hobby or have experience at it or are interested in learning about it, a dSLR might not be the best place to jump in. A good point and shoot is more than capable of taking great images under a lot of conditions. A dSLR just takes things to a different level but also requires a little more from the shutter presser. ;)
Just my 2 cents...and I will still use my P&S for coins more often than not as I don't have a dedicated macro lens.

Thanks for the replies. They have helped a lot. I have really been re-studying the cameras. I was really planning on getting a dSLR because of my past experience with 35mm SLR cameras and just wanted to get back into the hobby again. I still haven't made up my mind though if I want to go digital or back to film or maybe both. I have really been studying the "new" Panasonic 10 mg-pxl Lumix dmc-fz50k as my digital choice even over the dSLR's. The specs (especially the 12X+ optical zoom) and endless array of features are really amazing and I like the full auto or full manual capabilities. Looks like Panasonic has put a lot of experience and thought into this one to make it a 3-ring performer. If you have a chance, check it out. I was very impressed. http://www.beachcamera.com/shop/pro...u=PNDMCFZ50Kclick on the product description tab for full list of features.

OK, as if it wasn't a hard enough choice as it is, Olympus is about to dump an all-in-one on the market with 18x zoom and IS. Remember, these are the guys who started the long-zoom revolution with the C2100UZ (one I wish I'd never sold). http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/o.../index.shtml

http://www.beachcamera.com/shop/pro...u=PNDMCFZ50KWow! The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50K is an impressive camera, but at $463 would have been pushing my budget to its outer limits as specified in the original post, now almost 11 months old. My Canon S2-IS is everything I think I will ever need in a camera... at least for now. I bought it at $343, shipping included and now, naturally, they can be had for $279. In another month they'll be down to $200 and by the end of May, somebody will pay us to order them. Of course, two months after buying any of these cameras, they've become obsolete with the introduction of the next model to come along. Such is the digital age. Fred

How true you are! I can afford to wait until June (maybe May) before I really need to buy a camera so I will be watching prices very closely. Although, if that Panasonic gets close to the $400 mark I may not be able to resist.

Just saw the Panasonic listed for $399! Looks like I might just have to push the "BUY" button this Fri.
